Spreadsheet File Import - Detail

Spreadsheet File Import - Detail

_bm11This module allows you to import a spreadsheet file and convert it into the NeuroShell 2 internal file format. This module supports the import of any worksheet from Microsoft Excel workbooks (.XLW or .XLS files) for all versions up to Microsoft Excel 97. The module also works with any popular spreadsheet program, such as Lotus 1-2-3, QuattroPro, etc., that can save a file in .WK1 format.

Note:  You may also use your regular spreadsheet program as NeuroShell 2's data entry mechanism and not use the Spreadsheet File Import module.  Refer to the Datagrid for details.

Although NeuroShell 2's internal file format is .WK1 or .XLS (Excel 4) format, special range information has to be placed in the spreadsheet if you want a label row to be recognized as NeuroShell 2 labels.  The Spreadsheet File Import module does this.  If you have no label rows, you don't need to import the spreadsheet .WK1 or .XLS (Excel 4) file with the Spreadsheet File Import module.

Once you import a spreadsheet, you don't have to reimport it if you change the data, because the range information will still be included with the spreadsheet.  If you change the label rows, however, you should reimport the spreadsheet to include correct label information.

Spreadsheet File Import Module

Use the File Menu to select the file you want to import. The Spreadsheet File Import module will convert the spreadsheet file (or the selected worksheet of the workbook file) to a pattern file (.PAT is the default file extension).  Use the File Menu to change the default file name or to view the .PAT file after it is imported.

Note 1. To import worksheets from Microsoft Excel workbooks, the Spreadsheet File Import module needs the same (or higher) version of Microsoft Excel that created the workbook to be installed on the computer you are using with NeuroShell 2.  For example, if the workbook you want to import was created with Excel 97, Excel 97 needs to be installed on the same computer that has NeuroShell 2.  The reason is that the NeuroShell 2 Spreadsheet File Import module requires some Excel tools to perform the import.

Note 2. As the Spreadsheet File Import module saves the selected worksheet in .WK1 or .XLS (Excel 4) format, which is NeuroShell 2's internal file format, newer features of workbooks unsupported by this format cannot be saved.  In all such situations, you will get error messages from the Microsoft Excel tools that are used during import. However, you may continue to import the file. In this case, the imported file will contain only the features supported by NeuroShell 2's internal file format (these are enough to work with your data in NeuroShell 2). Your original workbook will remain unchanged. Otherwise, you may cancel import and enter Microsoft Excel to manually change the cells that cause errors, and then repeat the import process.

Spreadsheet Information Box

Select the worksheet you want to import from the dropdown box if you are using an Excel workbook. If the Spreadsheet File selected for import is a worksheet (.WK1 or .XLS format up to Microsoft Excel 4) and not a workbook, the dropdown box will be disabled.

Type in the edit box the number of the spreadsheet row that contains column labels.   If there are no column labels, either enter a 0 in the edit box or leave it blank.  The column labels become NeuroShell 2 input and output names.

Type in the next edit box the number of the spreadsheet row where data begins. You need to specify where data begins so NeuroShell 2 will know what data to include in the network.

Select the Import Menu to begin importing the spreadsheet. Also use this menu to interrupt the import procedure.
